Caption vs. Subtitles — What Can You Download?
TikTok actually has two different things people mean when they say “caption,” and it helps to know which one you want.
Video Caption (Description + Hashtags)
This is the text a creator writes when posting — the description below the video, including hashtags. If you've ever wanted to save a caption you liked, reuse a recipe written in the description, or pull hashtags for research, this is what you're extracting here. It downloads instantly as plain text.
Video Subtitles (Spoken-Word Captions)
This is the text version of what's actually said in the video — either TikTok's built-in auto-captions or an AI-generated transcription. These come with timecodes in formats like SRT or VTT. TikTok does not expose this subtitle track in a way a web tool can save, so this downloader returns the written caption only. To burn spoken subtitles into a video, generate them in your editor (CapCut and Premiere both do it automatically).

How to Turn On Auto Captions on TikTok
If you're the one posting and want your own video to show captions:
- Record or upload your video as normal.
- On the editing screen, tap Captions.
- Tap Auto captions and TikTok will generate them from your video's audio.
- Review and edit the text for accuracy, then adjust font, color, and placement if you'd like.
- Tap Save and continue to post as usual.
You can also add captions after posting by opening the video, tapping the three-dot menu, and selecting Edit.
Why Aren't My TikTok Auto Captions Showing Up?
This is one of the most common caption issues, usually caused by one of these:
- Auto-captions weren't enabled before posting. You have to turn them on during the editing step — they don't apply retroactively unless you go back and edit the post.
- Audio quality is too low. Background noise, quiet speech, or heavy music over dialogue can prevent TikTok from generating captions accurately.
- Language isn't fully supported. Auto-caption accuracy varies by language, and some regional dialects or mixed-language videos may not caption correctly.
- App version is outdated. Auto-captions are a newer feature — update TikTok to the latest version if the option is missing entirely.
- Viewer's caption setting is off. Even if a video has captions available, individual viewers can turn subtitle display off in their own accessibility settings.
